Rule of Symbolism

I’m a great believer in symbolism.

When I see 2 flowers coyly brushing against each other in a movie I nod understandingly because I know the flowers represent the reel-life couple who are supposedly ‘doing it’.

If I’m driving and I see a multi-coloured ball rolling innocuously across the road, I’ll stand on my brakes & screech to a halt to avoid hitting the child, who I know will be dashing after the ball nano-seconds later.

The same way I firmly believe that whatever happens on Jan 1st sets a precedent for the rest of the year.

What do you mean you don’t see the connection between the 3 instances I mentioned above???

May I remind you are reading the blog of an ordinary, overworked, underpaid[what pay???], harassed homemaker and not one of Einstein’s theories?

Jan 1st did not at all go the way I envisioned it.

We got up in the morning at………

Nope, not going to tell you the time.

Let's just leave it at...we had a LATE breakfast

The kids who were instructed to do some ‘symbolic’ studying vanished right after breakfast to play hang out with their friends.

Better-half also disappeared with a friend half-way thru.

Leaving me all alone contemplate where it all started to go wrong.

Lunch when it finally happened was at 4pm.

Now take a wild guess how I felt when I found myself still in the kitchen at 6pm on New Years Day clearing away lunch while the family and friends were in the living room, heatedly discussing a highly improbable takeover of Kingfisher Airlines by Etihad Airways.

I was soooo tired and raging inwardly.

And knew there was no hope for me for the next 365 days.

2013 was going to be screwed, I just knew it.

I know you are wondering what you could possibly comment without hurting my feelings, without letting me know how big a non-issue you find the whole issue.

And me, I just hate myself when I put my favourite people in such sticky situations.

So  just for you I’ll try to recall if there was anything positive about the whole day.

How about this….

On Jan 1st I ate some sinfully rich & scrumptious birthday cake.

We had sizzlers for dinner.

Yes I've already realized I’ll be eating my way thru 2013:-S

My birthday was good though.

I don’t want to bore you with all the details. So will just give you the jist of it.

Better-half fixed an English breakfast for us.

A LATE English breakfast[CAPS helpfully added so that you don’t miss the symbolism].

The ONLY day in the whole year he makes a meal.

I played patriotic songs on the laptop while I waited to be served.

I would rather have watched the Republic Day parade but we don't have Doordarshan.

It was GOOD.

The breakfast I mean.

A meal fit for a Queen & her entourage.

We didn't behave like Royalty though.

We stuffed ourselves so much it was not funny.

Half an hour later when I loudly deliberated over the lunch menu; the family clamped their hands over their ears & made gagging sounds.

I mentally rubbed my hands in glee.

Because it meant I was free for the rest of the day.

Then in the evening in a surprise move they took me out and I got a DSLR for a birthday gift.

A Nikon D5200.

Now that was a wonderful surprise;-D.

I thought they were going to get me this gorgeous stooopid bag I was staring at earlier in the month.

In short a SUPER birthday.

Which brings me back to my rock-steady belief in symbolism.

After much delibration, I've decided to take the whole month into consideration[one day is too less to judge a whole year right] and have come to the conclusion that it is going to be a year of highs and lows.

It seems like the first half of every month I’ll be in the depths of despair and the next 15 days will see me as high as a kite.

Will keep you in the loop ofcourse, whether you like it or not, goes without saying.

p.s: If my post didn’t make you laugh then read this one…it's DI's tutorial on how to get a free postcard from Dubai.

p.p.s: And if you want to laugh some more then read this New Year post I wrote 2 years back. I'm determined that you laugh atleast once before you leave here.

p.p.p.s: I’ll post the much-hyped photograph in my next post. I wanted to post it today but somehow found myself typing this out.

Rule of Symbolism: It's considered deep and profound for some, dumb & pretentious for others.

  1. Want to see some really nice pictures with ur new camera.
Not fair, how come DI get's a postcard just by asking bohooooooo.

    ur handwriting is super

    1. Still going thru the features of the camera as of now. My old one was a simple point & shoot so all the features on the new one are intimidating;-(.
I was not thinking clearly when I sent tht postcard to DI....next time there will be no mistakes;-P.

Even though I don't think so it still feels nice to receive the compliment, thanks Seema:-)).

  2. The symbolism works only for the new years day. While this blog post started so wonderfully (late eating, working on new year) :P, it then became slightly uninteresting (the English breakfast and all) :)

The bag might have been less expensive? Wonder why the camera was chosen instead? Any symbolic deep insights you can read here? :P

    Destination Infinity

    1. Hehe first time I really liked your comment DI...the last 2 questions hit the spot, yes to the latter, with each one more deeper than the previous:-)).

  3. Happy Birthday Nancy! Belated, yet, heartful :)

Now, we will expect more posts, what with a new NIKON DSLR (Everything else in the post was blurred the moment I read NIKON :P)

Post more pictures (not just the hyped one), please...maybe, you can post a lot of pictures and have us choose from them as to which won you the prize, and the ones who choose it right will win mmmmmmm, err, mmm, your old camera?! :P

    1. Hey that's a good idea but I doubt I have the guts to do it...I mean the picture I won the prize itself is nothing extraordinary. I feel I just got lucky;-P.
As for the old camera the kids are already fighting over it;-D

  4. Very very profound Nance :P Am so glad u had an awesome birthday :)
Waiting for the much-hyped pic now ;)

  5. Hey! Belated happy birthday and congrats on the DSLR! How could you not be high as a kite with a DSLR??? For the first half of the month, should despair drag you down, I suggest you click something, anything, with it and let it cheer you up. Or you could think of me, poor DSLR-less child, and then count your blessings and cheer up :P Anyway, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful year ahead :)

(P.S. can you guess what the no.1 item on my wishlist is? :P)

    1. Good, GREAT idea...will do just that;-D.

DSLR or not, I always think one should have the 'eye' and you know you have it so dont go OTT to make me feel better, that's my department anyway;-P.

p.s: The day is not far off...I can see it from here:-D.

  6. "We didn't behave like Royalty though." haha that line had me laughing here in office.. ! DSLR ! Thats a wonderful gift I say... Good to know you had an awesome birthday... and, every day need not be like that New Year's day...cos I believed that too once upon a time and saved my new dress to wear on New Years... hoping that I'd get new clothes all through the year...but it never worked ever. So... u know right. Anyway... hi 2 to the kids !

    1. Oh Anita I totally get what u r trying to say but it's just soo true for me. U knw on the same day we dressed up to go out & the H went off to do some last minute errand. So I thought I'll finish off my work while waiting for him. And u wont believe, after that everytime we get ready to go out I've been doing some work AFTER I've gotten all dressed up. Which has never happened before;-S. Stoopid things I tell u but it all adds up somehow;-P.

      Glad it made you laugh;-D!!!!

  7. ah born on the first of Jan! :) Belated heppy birthday!!!!

  9. Belated Happy Bday Nancy. A surprise DSLR (what more can one ask for) too good

    1. Thanks Elizabeth, oh yes completely unexpected but a very welcome gift;-D

  10. Ha ha ha. Laughed loudly and heartily, much before I came to the PSs. N's writing style is like no other - unigue and refreshing.

I believe in symbolism too. Therefore, dear lady, the first 15 days you can post each day, because we will all commiserate with you and the next 15 days, you can post daily so that you can make us all cheerful.

    Deal ?

    1. U believe in symbolisms;-o...now that os a very interesting bit of information u have given us....very interested in knowing more;-D.
And I'm not touching the last part of ur paragraph with a 10 foot pole;-D

We can shake hands on that if u want;-D

  11. Loved your starting..yes we are good at symbolism:)

    1. Ahaaa...I recognise a fellow-believer when I read one;-D. Thanks Renu:-))!!!
